The Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy) has been a cornerstone of science fiction television since its launch in 1992. Over the years, it has delivered some of the most imaginative, thought-provoking, and entertaining original series in the genre. From space operas to quirky small-town mysteries, Syfy’s original programming has captivated SF fans and even viewers who only occasionally wander into the genre. Below, I rank what I consider to be the top five original science fiction shows from the channel, and though this list is subjective, believe me when I say, all of the entries are ridiculously entertaining and worth your time.

1. Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)

Best SyFy Original Series

Synopsis

This reimagining of the 1978 series follows humanity’s struggle for survival after a devastating attack by the Cylons—sentient robots originally created by humans. With their home planets destroyed, the remnants of humanity (about 50,000 survivors) flee aboard a fleet of ships led by the last remaining military vessel, the Battlestar Galactica. Their mission? To find the mythical planet Earth while evading relentless Cylon pursuit. The series explores themes of survival, identity, morality, and faith as humans and Cylons grapple with their intertwined fates.

Review

Battlestar Galactica is widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made. Its gritty realism, complex characters, and morally ambiguous storytelling set a new standard for the genre. The show masterfully blends action with philosophical questions about what it means to be human. The performances—particularly Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama and Mary McDonnell as President Roslin—are stellar. The series also features stunning visual effects and a hauntingly beautiful score by Bear McCreary. Whether you’re a fan of space battles or existential drama, Battlestar Galactica is a must-watch.

2. Farscape (1999–2003)

Best SyFy Original Series

Synopsis

Astronaut John Crichton is accidentally flung through a wormhole into a distant part of the universe. He finds himself aboard Moya, a living spaceship commandeered by a group of alien fugitives on the run from the militaristic Peacekeepers. As Crichton struggles to adapt to his new reality, he becomes embroiled in intergalactic conflicts while searching for a way back to Earth.

Review

Farscape is a bold and imaginative series that stands out for its rich world-building and unique characters. Produced by Jim Henson Productions, it features groundbreaking puppetry and makeup effects that bring its alien cast to life in unforgettable ways. The dynamic between Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) is electric, and the show’s blend of humor, drama, and action keeps viewers hooked. While it occasionally veers into absurdity, Farscape’s willingness to take creative risks makes it one of Syfy’s most beloved cult classics.

3. Eureka (2006–2012)

Best SyFy Original Series

Synopsis

Set in the quirky fictional town of Eureka, Oregon, this series follows U.S. Marshal Jack Carter as he becomes sheriff of a community populated by scientific geniuses working on cutting-edge experiments at Global Dynamics—a secretive government research facility. Each episode revolves around technological mishaps or experiments gone awry that Carter must resolve with his down-to-earth problem-solving skills.

Review

Eureka is a delightful mix of science fiction and comedy that charms viewers with its lighthearted tone and inventive storylines. The show thrives on its “small-town with big secrets” premise and boasts an endearing ensemble cast led by Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter. While it doesn’t tackle heavy philosophical themes like some other entries on this list, Eureka’s whimsical approach to sci-fi makes it an accessible and entertaining watch for all ages. Its exploration of advanced technology often serves as both cautionary tale and comedic fodder.

4. The Magicians (2015–2020)

Ok, this one is a bit of a cheat, since it’s a show that’s rooted in fantasy, magic, and myth instead of SF tropes, but it’s also one of my favorites, and simply too good to leave off this list.

Best SyFy Original Series

Synopsis

Based on Lev Grossman’s novels, The Magicians follows Quentin Coldwater, a college student who discovers that magic is real when he enrolls at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy. Alongside his friends Alice, Eliot, Margo, and Penny, Quentin uncovers dark secrets about magic’s origins while navigating dangerous adventures in both their world and Fillory—a fantastical realm that hides sinister threats.

Review

Often described as “Harry Potter for adults,” The Magicians combines fantasy with dark humor and emotional depth. The show excels at deconstructing traditional tropes about magic while addressing real-world issues like mental health and identity. Its ensemble cast delivers standout performances—particularly Hale Appleman as Eliot—and its unpredictable plot twists keep viewers on their toes. While some seasons are stronger than others, The Magicians’ inventive storytelling and mature themes make it one of Syfy’s most compelling offerings.

5. Dark Matter (2015–2017)

Best SyFy Original Series

Synopsis

Six strangers wake up aboard a derelict spaceship with no memories of who they are or how they got there. As they piece together their identities—ranging from mercenaries to criminals—they uncover secrets about their pasts while navigating interstellar conflicts and conspiracies.

Review

Dark Matter is an underrated gem that combines mystery with classic space opera elements. Its premise—a group of amnesiac antiheroes forced to work together—is executed with surprising depth as each character’s backstory unfolds over three seasons. The show explores themes like redemption, loyalty, and identity while delivering plenty of action-packed sequences. Although it was canceled before its planned conclusion, Dark Matter remains a satisfying journey for fans of character-driven sci-fi.
